Sports - For Men ONLY Essay -- Research Essays

Sports - For Men ONLY Many people have the stereotype that males are more aggressive than females. How a person develops this belief is one aspect of the research that I will study. It may be because it is only politically correct to be so. Since this is true, it is also believed that men prefer to enjoy aggressive athletics more than women do. I am a huge fan of almost any type of team sport. You name it, I probably enjoy it. I am not sure why this is true. It could simply be because I’m a guy, or because I was raised watching sports or because I played high school athletics for a year. This is why I decided to choose this interesting topic. I wanted to know if it is true that men enjoy watching physical team sports than women enjoy them. Furthermore, if this is true, I wanted to find out why it is that way. Physical team sports include football, basketball and hockey. Despite this claim, there may be some people who do not find this true. Many females enjoy sports. I am a friend with many women who enjoy football, especially. There are even guys who do not even know that sports may exist. They have more important things to worry about in life. I find this hard to believe, because I was raised following and loving sports. This is why I will prove that men enjoy sports even more than popular belief. Many methods were used in an attempt to prove or disprove my hypothesis. I performed a survey on ten college students, I observed a group of people watching athletic events and I also observed television commercials to determine if advertisers are more biased toward men for athletics. Later, in order to establish further proof to my conclusions, a final interview was used on four college students. For th... ... successfully prove my hypothesis. Surely, more men enjoy watching and participating in physical athletics such as football, basketball and hockey than women do. I was able to prove this through the survey, case study and interviews administered. I also used commercials and advertisements to further assist the research. One can certainly see that through all four methods sports pertain to men a lot more than they do to women. This is believed to be so since there are more professional athletics available to men and also it is only proper for a man to watch sports due to what is ‘politically correct’. Women are ‘supposed to’ tend to the house and believe that there are more important things to life than just sports. I believe that society hopes eventually these stereotypes can be eliminated and sports will not be considered gender specific aimed toward men.

Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day

Word Count: 617 Teanna Armstrong Enc 1102 Essay #3 March 11, 2013 Sonnet, Theme, and Structure of â€Å"Shall I Compare thee to a Summer’s Day? † A sonnet’s structure has symbolism and it presents the theme in many poems of Literature. In the poem â€Å"Shall I Compare thee to a Summer’s Day? † by William Shakespeare happens to be a sonnet. To begin with, the sonnet mentioned above is called a Shakespearean sonnet. It is composed of three four-line quatrains and a concluding two-line couplet. Certain components of the author’s point are suggested to be based on its structural patterns; components such as thought and feeling.Meaning this sonnet can introduce the subject in the first quatrain, expand and develop it in the second and third quatrains, and conclude something about it in its final couplet. This whole set up helps the reader to capture the theme; and helps the author to organize the theme. As well as, the sonnet’s structure p lays a key role, other than just being a Shakespeare and sonnet. The structure of the sonnet is strictly constrained, and this one in particular is believed to be a fixed form sonnet. Poems in fixed forms are recognized by their rhyme, meter, and repetition.Furthermore, usually in its opening line the central idea of the poems is expressed. The theme of the poem â€Å"Shall I Compare the to a summer’s day† May be stated as: Can someone, or the subject, really be compared to all the components of a summer after understanding the theme it shows the reader that the sonnet is asking is the subject comparable to a summer’s day, making the structure of the poem easier to understand. To illustrate, the theme is hinted in the first half of the first stanza; which starts the order of the sonnet’s theme. It is clearly indicated that the second line: â€Å"Shall I compare thee to a summer’s Day? (874) is the question that he will be answering. This question also shows that a comparison will be made. The question that remains is what is being compared to what. This is answered in the second line, which states â€Å"Thou art more lovely and more temperate† (874). This statement shows that Shakespeare is comparing a summer’s day to a person who is more lovely and temperate compared to the day of a summer. Moreover, the structure of this sonnet has setup the central theme for the reader in the first stanza. What lies in the next two stanzas are details and deeper emotions or thoughts to fill the reader’s mind with illusions of the sonnet.These middle stanzas are placed in Shakespearean sonnets for this essential reason. The details in this particular selection creates more compare and contrast examples between that person and a Summer’s day. Although Shakespeare wrote the contrast and compare by explaining all of the Cons of summer in these two stanzas, and in the last two line, also known as the couplet, he tur ns the direction back onto the person he was speaking of to show what the cons were compared to. Not only that, but Shakespeare also showed meaning in this couplet: â€Å"So long as men can breathe†¦ This gives life to thee† (874).The statement stated before is meaning the opposite of what was said in the first two stanzas about the summer. Instead, Shakespeare is indicating that the person will live on through his poem forever unlike a Summer’s day. In Conclusion, many poems have different components that lead the reader to realize the central theme. In sonnets particularly, everything is placed where it should be for a reason. In Thailand, the educational quality is regulated by the office for national education standard and quality assessment (ONESQA). Faculty development is one of quality assurance indicators that reflect the standard of educational administration (ONESQA, 2015). Regarding faculty development, ONESQA defined its criteria as professional development that institutes have to develop faculty to gain an academic qualification by having the plan, system, and the mechanism (ONESQA, 2013). Summary Of The Bluest Eye And Where We Once Belonged

Drawing inspiration from Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, Sia Figiel utilizes some of the same techniques and covers similar themes in her novel Where we Once Belonged which primarily centers around Alofa, a girl growing up in a village Samoa. Although the narrative voices of Claudia from The Bluest Eye and Alofa from Where we Once Belonged differ in their presence and focus, they both offer a young female adolescent’s perspective on life in their communities and how the influences of different cultural expectations affect their own identity. Have so many of them piled up over time that is seems so overwhelming that you could run through them in a mad list in your head? Well then welcome to one of Jamaica Kincaid’s famous short stories, â€Å"Girl†. In the essay â€Å"Girl,† Jamaica Kincaid portrays the stereotypes and expectations placed on women and girls of her culture in the 1950’s. She uses authoritative tone, syntax, and progression of thought to show the expected responsibilities of girls and women in the narrator’s culture. This is defiantly something no girl would have to worry about, and the narrator had obviously progressed to talk about young women who might have to deal with this situation. The narrator also tells how how to love a man, â€Å"this is how to love a man, and if this doesn’t work there are other ways, and if they don’t work don’t feel too bad about giving up;†(p. 201). Only young women would have to know these thing and this shows that the narrator is moving progressively through time as she describes the responsibilities of women. Having the essay progress gives the feeling of a flashback on all of the responsibilities placed on women throughout her life. Last if you treat one unfair because of one of their features than everyone should have be treated unfair because no one person is the same. Learning is one of the greatest abilities god gave us and the Holocaust is something we can learn from. How can someone not say something when people they know are being taken away never to return when they have done nothing wrong? That is like robbing a house just because the door was unlocked. You just don’t do that. Even neighbors were taken away for what being different? I myself know that Hitler may have killed you, but it would be for a good cause. Everyone was just scared and selfish, they didn’t care what was happening to the â€Å"outsiders† (Jews, Gypsies, and Homosexuals) all they cared about was that their family was safe. Speaking up is just a little sacrifice you can take to safe peoples lives. Hiding was one of the ways the â€Å"outsiders† tried to protect themselves Gestapo and Nazi’s. Say you know where your Jewish neighbor was hiding, would you tell where they are or would you help them get food? I would help even though it would be risking my own life for inset people that are all the same as you and I. They do not deserve to be treated differently than everyone else. It would be worth all pain and sacrifice to save millions of people. Hiding was one of the ways that Jews had some power in the time of the Holocaust. As you can see the Holocaust will and is a major part of history. There are so many more things that you can learn from this happening. If you see people rising to power and doing things wrong speak out. It would be good for you and the rest of us. Lets hope nothing like this will happen again. Encarta defines it as a tropical cyclone with winds up to 74 mph (119 kph.) To many people it means destruction. Hurricane Floyd caused tremendous destruction to America as well as set it back a few million. Stay with me as we track the storm. Tropical Storm Floyd forms in Atlantic Washington September 8, 1999 The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported Tropical Storm Floyd, the sixth named storm of the season, formed about 800 miles east of the Leeward Islands. Floyd had maximum winds of 40 mph and was forecast to intensify to minimal hurricane strength with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Tropical storm force winds extended up to 85 miles from the center of the storm. The system moved west-northwest at 16 mph and forecasters expected Floyd to continue along this track for 72 hours. Floyd was in an area very favorable for development and satellite images indicated the system was strengthening. The center of the system was not yet well defined, but forecasters believed Floyd could reach major hurricane strength with maximum sustained winds of 112 mph or more after 72 hours. Tropical Storm Floyd Continues to Intensify Washington, September 9, 1999 The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Tropical Storm Floyd was located about 450 miles east of the Leeward Islands. The strong tropical storm and had maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. NHC Forecasters expected the system to reach minimal hurricane strength within the next 24 hours and thought it will be a strong Category II hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 109 mph within 72 hours. Tropical storm force winds extended outward up to 115 miles from the center of the storm. Floyd moved toward the west-northwest at 15 mph and was expected to continue this motion. NHC expected Floyd to pass well north of the Leeward Islands. Floyd Now a Hurricane Washington, September 10, 1999 National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded Floyd to a hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. As of 8:00 AM EDT, the system was located about 210 miles east-northeast of Barbuda in the northern Leeward Islands. Some of Floyds outer rain bands were already over part of the islands. Data from Air Force Hurricane Hunters flights indicated Floyd was strengthening and was forecasted to intensify to a Category III hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph by early Monday morning. Tropical storm force winds extended outward up to 175 miles from the center of the storm. Floyd moved toward the west-northwest at 12 mph and forecasters expected it to continue along this path for the remainder of that day, keeping the center of the storm north of the Leeward Islands. However, they cautioned that any deviation to the left of the forecasted track would bring tropical storm conditions to the northern most islands of the northeastern Caribbean.
